Among the destinations presented on the International Travel Mart in China to the visitors were Bali, Lake Toba, Tanjung Kelayang, Borobudur Temple, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo and Manado.
“The number of Chinese travelers is the biggest in the world, up to 120 million people, but only two percent traveled to Indonesia. This is the perfect timing for promotion as we are nearing the year-end holidays,” explained the ministry’s deputy minister for overseas promotion I Gde Pitana.
Forty tourism industry players such as airlines, hotels, travel agents, cruise ships and diving centers, as well as 11 provincial tourism agencies were present at the Indonesia booth.
The booth offered visitors with Indonesian food and beverages and performances from the Wonderful Indonesia team, as well as latest information regarding Mount Agung in Bali.
Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data shows that in 2015 Chinese tourists took the third spot for the number of foreign tourists who visited Indonesia, or equal to 11 percent (1,141,330 people) from the total number of foreign tourists.
In 2016, China went up to the second spot with 1,452,971 people, 11 percent from the total number of foreign tourists. Meanwhile the first spot was given to Singapore.
As for this year, from January until September, there were 1,103,503 Chinese tourists who came to Indonesia, up 45.68 percent from the same period last year that recorded 1,606,615 people.
